The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement arrives after challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.
A Chart Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, leading to widespread flooding, blackouts, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those final dry conditions.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average
Yet, experts warn that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.
This snowpack, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts point out that it is too early to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor is entirely green, the next challenge is to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
